how do I prevent automatic printing via the print icon?
I have a 400 page manual that I want to prevent various users from printing
by pressing the print icon instead of accessing the print dialogue boz where they can choose just the pages they need. Outside of deleting 70 print icons on individual workstations, is there a way a Document can be programmed to prevent printing, or force the user to the print dialgue box? |

One approach (not 100% guaranteed to work for every user) is to modify the
toolbar that's associated with that particular document. One option is simply to remove the Print tool from the toolbar. A better option, however, would be to replace that tool with the one that brings up the Print dialog instead of printing directly to the printer. To do this: 1. Open the manual. 2. Choose Tools - Customize - Commands tab. 3. Under Save In, if the manual has its own template, then set Save In to that template. If the manual's template is Normal.dot, then set Save In to the manual itself. (this is best if not everyone has access to the manual's template). 4. With the customize dialog still active, drag the Print icon off of the standard toolbar. 5. With the customioze dialog STILL active, choose File (from the main menu) and look for the Print... command. 6. Hold down the Ctrl key (this copies rather than moves), and drag a copy of the Print... command to the Standard toolbar where the old Print icon was, and drop it there. Choose Close on the Customize dialog. Then save/close the manual, and test to see if it works. Copy the document to one of the "victim's" computers, and see if it still work. Hopefully, they won't now see two Standard toolbars instead of one (which might happen under some circumstances). -- Herb Tyson MS MVP Please respond in the newsgroups so everyone can follow along. http://www.herbtyson.com "quail" wrote in message ...
