Just installed Word when I try to use it I can type about 8 or 10 words and
the cursor leaves the page--the blue ms bar at the top of the page fades to a
light blue. I can click back on the line where I'm typing but the same
things happen. The same thing happens when I use my word processer program.

Clarification please. What is the difference between Word and "my word
processor program?"

You must have more than one program open.

If you arranjge so that the Word screen is less than full screen and also
have the other program's screen less than full screen and also so that
both have the top bar visable, you will find that the cursor moves to the
window which is active. Aslo, the top banner will change depending on
whether it is the active one ("has the focus").

There must be some event happening in the other program that is causing
it to take fucus.

If you do not want that to happen, make sure Word is the only application
open and that Windows, itself has no windows open other than the desktop.
