Default can't open general templates - not enough memory or disk space

Trying to pull up general templates in Word. File... New... and clicks on
General Templates on the right side. The following error comes up: there is
not enough memory or disk space to complete the operation.

This just started happening. Have rebooted the computer but still can't get
to General Templates. Are there settings I can check for this? Is there a
minimum amount of memory that a computer needs? We currently have 512 MB of
RAM.
