Default docx. saves as doc - now receiver can not read it

to manage an upload of a word document created in Micro office word 2007 it
was suggested the document needed to go from being saved as a a docx. to a
doc. (using 2003 -97) this worked for the upload except now it is not
readable at their end - what happened - any ideas?
thanks so much
