I have a series of automatic numbered headings but I would like the text to
precede the number letter. E.g

Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3

or;

Activity A.
Activity B.
Activity C.

is this possible or is there another way?

Certainly. If this is Word 2003 or earlier, go to Format | Bullets and
Numbering, choose Outline Numbered, and look at the examples that have
Chapter and Article/Section headings. You can start by modifying these
numbering formats. Note that by default they're linked to Word's built-in
