Default WINWORD.EXE starts at boot up of PC

Should WINWORD.EXE start at bootup or is this due to a virus?

No it shouldn't, but that doesn't mean you have a virus. The wonderful world
of Windows has many shades of grey. Check the usual suspects first: check
your registry for instances of winword.exe -- is there an entry under
Windows\Run?; check the start menu; check the services list.

Or whether there's a shortcut to winword.exe in Windows' Startup folder.

winword.exe is not in the startup folder nor is it in the Windows/Run folder.
Any other ideas?

It's not starting itself. Keep looking. It's your computer.
