Default File Saves Word 97

Word 97 running on XP, Sony Vaio TV-PC. Word 97 running well until recently.
When trying to save a file (FileSave As), the dialogue box opens but without
any previously saved files showing . It takes ages (probably 30 to 45 secs)
for the list of files in that directory to appear. Egg timer on in the
meantime. When it does populate, you can save the file OK. Swapping to
another directory from the default directory also takes ages. Plenty of
memory (512Mb) and plenty free. Also huge amount of free disk space. PC
generally isn't used for anything else at all. Using windows explorer to
look at directories etc. is no problem. Opens immediately with files showing
also right away. I could re-install, but intrigued to know what problem
might be in case it returns after re-installation. Any advice much
appreciated.

Silver, you may need to just clean up the hard drive on this PC. See:
http://www.officearticles.com/misc/h...hard_drive.htm
If that doesn't help, Word could be needing some help (and it could be as
simple as the normal.dot file being bad). See:

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
