Default Styles: Applying a style to one paragraph changes whole document

I am using Word 2007 for the first time as a formating tool.

I have created a style called 'Dissertation Body', based on 'Normal'.

I try to apply the Style to one paragraph but for some reason the whole
document changes to the same style. I cant figure out why this is happening.
I am good with the previous version of word but cant figure it out in this
version.

Can anybody help

Thanks. Tried it, but this still does not fix the issue. If I select a style
for a selected menu the whole document changes.

I cant believe this 2007 version is so bad. Surely this should have been
fixed by now. The version is fully upto date with upgrades. There must be a
fix.

What did you try that didn't work?

Can you describe every step you do that results in this problem, and
every step from the FAQ that you did?

I tried the soltution for windows 2007. BUT I now think I might be about to
discover the problem. I copied a body of text from a hotmail email in to the
document and procededed to set up the formatting for it. I think it might be
that this text is regarded as one paragraph, even though it looks like a
series of paragraphs and bullet points. maybe word 2007 doesnt handle an
import like this other than basic text and spaces?

so when I try format one apparent paragraph, it is in fact not a paragraph,
and really is just a segment of text within a huge paragraph which is the
complete copied email. Old versions of word seemed to handle this type of cut
and paste.

Ah yes. Just switched on all formatting markers and I see it is in fact the
way either the mail has been formatted with line down's rather than carriage
returns. Egg on face. Sorry for wasting time here.
Thank you for help thus far. :-0

I always have Show Paragraph Marks and Show Tabs turned on. (The only
place it's problematic is in table cells, so I put a button on the
Quick Access Toolbar for toggling Paragraph Marks -- it's a
preinstalled macro, and you can find a little thread on it here from
maybe a week ago.)
