Default Mailmerge gets "PCL XL error" on HP Laserjet P4014n

Try checking the Printer manufacturer's website for an updated printer
driver.

Word 2003. I print "current record" from mail merge to be sure the letter
is
correctly formatted. Making no changes, I print "current record" again -
and
get PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: IllegalOperatorSequence
Operator: Endchar
Position: 24

If use PageSetup or printer properties to change the paper source, it
prints
ok the first time, but the error returns the next time. It seems to
require a
change in paper source before it will print. Any clues?
TIA
