Everything works except there is no print option when I click on file. Any
other suggestions? I tried copying and pasting into a blank word document,
and the first list did copy, but when I go into a subfold and try and copy
and paste, it actually opens the files and pastes the entire file instead of
the list of files. Would appreciate any more help I can get

Default How can I print a list of files within a folder?

Hmmm... It looks like Microsoft is doing everything in its power to prevent
people from printing lists of files. :-( The Outlook-based procedure in the
page I quoted doesn't work in Outlook 2003 because some of the important
bits have been removed from Outlook. The non-Outlook-based procedure depends
on having a printer assigned to the LPT1 port, which doesn't work with the
USB printers that are most common today.

I think the best alternative is to search Google for a free utility to print
file lists. An example is PrintFolder 1.3 at
http://no-nonsense-software.com/freeware/. I haven't used it, so I can't say
how well it works -- but there are tons of others on the Net.

And while you're in the mood, rewrite your original post as a Suggestion for
Microsoft. I think it would get at least a couple of million "yes" votes.

Thanks again for your help. I am hesitant to download any freeware though.
Any advice. Also, how would I rewrite it to be a suggestion and I will do
it. Thanks again!

I think this is the same utility Graham Mayor has available for download
from http://www.gmayor.com/downloads.htm, and he vouches for it.

PrintFolders (currently the 1.2 version) has been available for download
from my web site for some time. What's your problem with freeware? Paying
for software doesn't guarantee it works any better. This little utility does
exactly what it says on the tin.

I have just had a quick look and it does not appear to be the same
application. Stick with the version on my web site.

Default How can I print a list of files within a folder?

I do this so often I can practically recite it :-)

1. Open a Windows Command prompt
2. At the cursor, type "CD C:\" (without any quotes). That repositions to
the top of C drive. If the folder you're interested in is in another drive,
change the letter as appropriate.
3. Now type ³dir /b /n ³ (no quotes, note the final space. Do not hit
enter.)
4. Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder you are interested in.
5. Change to List view
6. Select the folder you want, drag it into the Command Prompt and drop it.
7. The path you just dragged should have appeared with quotes. After the
quote type ³ list.txt²
8. Now hit Enter
9. Close the command prompt
10. Go look in the root of your C drive. You will find a file named
³list.txt² containing the listing of your folder content.
11. The file names are on the far right.
12. Select all of the text and Copy
13. Open a new document in Word and Paste
14. Hold down the Alt key
15. Drag from the first character on the first line, down and across until
you select a vertical column that extends up to but does not include the
file names
16. Tap Delete

Voila! A directory listing. Keep these instructions: you will need them
from time to time :-)

Cheers

Open a DOS prompt in the folder. Type dir /b dir.txt.

Open the dir.txt file with Notpad and print it.
