Default Word says date is invalid in the filter value in mail merge

I am set up to enter dates as 11-Feb-09 in regional preferences. I enter
dates in Excel as dates, formatted as dd-MMM-yy. I want to do a mail merge
where I select only rows where Send Status letter is equal to a given date in
the filter. When I try to enter the filter date in the dialog, I get date is
invalid.

What is the correct way (format) to enter a date in this field?

Word 2007, Excel 2007.

Thanks

As far as I know, in Word 2007 using the default OLE DB connection
method, you can specify the date in US MM/DD/YYYY format or YYYY-MM-DD
format. However, it would not surprise me if this did not always work...
