Thanks, Klaus --
But the document doesn't have any Word footnotes. It's scanned,
and the * indicates a footnote. I want to do a find/replace and
insert a footnote reference in lieu of the *.
Is that possible?

|You can change custom footnotes into auto-numbered footnotes with a macro:

|Once you've done that, you can choose the numbering scheme in the footnote dialog.
|Likely, it'll already be the default 1, 2, 3 style.
