Default Updating styles across templates

Can anyone point me to a good, simple explanation of how style definitions
are driven by the Normal template? I have a large number of templates to
update with revised styles, and was hoping I can make the changes once in the
Normal template.

Can anyone enlighten me further?

Default Updating styles across templates

Thanks....helps a little, in that the answer seems to be:
"You can add, delete or modify styles in a template, and the change will
affect documents you create from this template in the future. But it won't
affect existing documents."

However on the following linked page, it states that :
"You can update the document with its template's styles. To do that, Tools
Templates and Add€‘Ins. Tick the Automatically Update Document Styles box.
Then, immediately go back and un-tick that box. Don't leave the box ticked."

This leads me to think perhaps templates could also be updated with the
styles from their parent template.....

Not really.

It will work if you manually open the template as a document. But it won't
keep working after you close the template.

Note that Automatically update styles should toggle OFF automatically if the
template is Normal.dot.

Cheers
