Two things to check:

1. Make sure there's not a macro named FilePrint that's hijacking the Print
command. Look in Tools | Macro | Macros for a FilePrint macro (*not* in
"Word commands").

2. Make sure Ctrl+P hasn't been assigned to something else. Open Tools |
Customize, click Keyboard..., select any command and press Ctrl+P; see what
Word says the shortcut is assigned to (should be FilePrint and nothing
else).

Done all that and the test works fine with the keyboard, however when you
close off and try it in the document it dose not work.
Must be some other program that is taking control of the keyboard

Not impossible. For almost as long as I've had Word, I've had Ctrl+M
assigned as a keyboard shortcut for an em dash even though I really wanted
to use Ctrl+Shift+M. The latter, however, just would not work; eventually I
realized it was because Ctrl+Shift+M had been hijacked by After Dark (the
classic screen saver app) as its Mute key. That was over a decade ago, and
I'm still living with the consequences.

I'm not sure whether the hierarchy would be the same, but I do know that
SnagIt uses Ctrl+P as its default screen capture shortcut; if SnagIt were
running, that might be an issue (I can't say since I reassigned it to
Ctrl+Alt+P).
