You could use a center-aligned tab stop, but if you really want the text
wrapped around the picture, then you should change the wrapping from In Line With Text to Square and then set the horizontal position as Centered Relative to Margins. -- Suzanne S. Thanks! This was very helpful!
Is it also possible to include a figure caption in this case, that is automatically included in a list of figures? Thanks... "Suzanne S. How to center a figure in the middle of an outlined paragraph?
If the graphic is wrapped, a caption will be inserted in a text box, which
will NOT be seen by a Table of Figures (except in Word 2007). For that situation, it is preferable to insert both the figure and the caption inline, then select both and insert a frame. You can wrap text around the frame. You won't find Frame on the Insert menu in recent versions (unless you've added it, as I have), but you can find an Insert Frame button on the Forms toolbar. -- Suzanne S. Thank you for the very quick responses!
The text is actually not wrapped (only text immediately above and below the figure). Is it easier in this case? "Suzanne S. How to center a figure in the middle of an outlined paragraph?
Dear Susan,
I followed your advice, and use a center-aligned tab stop to place a centered figure in the middle of a justified paragraph (top and bottom wrapping). This works quite well for justifying text while centering the figure. However, I often have the problem that the paragraph text takes the formatting (font size and line spacing) of the figure caption. Could you tell me how I can prevent this? Thanks in advance, Lot "Lot" wrote: This was very helpful! Thank you! "Suzanne S. That is *not* what I was suggesting. I was suggesting that you insert the
figure in its own centered paragraph, with the caption below it in its own centered paragraph (or possibly both in a single paragraph). The text above and below would be in separate (justified) paragraphs. -- Suzanne S. How to center a figure in the middle of an outlined paragraph?
Ok, but my initial question was how I could enter a figure in the middle of a
paragraph... with different formatting of paragraph text and figure (which you want to do when you want to put the figure at the top of a page while the paragraph with text was not finished at the bottom of the previous page). If you enter the figure in a different paragraph, the last line on the previous page is not justified. Is this possible? Thanks "Suzanne S. Barnhill" wrote: That is *not* what I was suggesting. How to center a figure in the middle of an outlined paragraph?
You can justify the last line of the paragraph on the previous page by
inserting a line break (Shift+Enter) and then formatting the paragraph mark as 1 point or Hidden. Your way is also reasonable for this, but you won't be able to apply a different paragraph style for the figure and caption. For example, if you want some space between the figure and caption or caption and body text, you'll have to fudge it with empty lines instead of being able to insert Space Before/After. -- Suzanne S.
