Default Applying style on part of a line only

Can anyone tell me how to split a line so that I can include both heading
style and normal style on the same line. I know it can be done. I want to
include an explanation on the same line as the heading but I only want the
heading listed on the TOC. It's some key combination or other but I just
can't remember what it is e.g. Shift and Enter allows you to move to the next
line without starting a new paragraph
