You need to place an Index Entry { XE } field by every occurrence you
want to index. Word will do this for you; select the word to be indexed, press Ctrl-Alt-X; click the Mark All button to mark every occurrence of the selected text (it's case-sensitive -- if you're marking Smith, it won't find smith). (You don't place any bookmarks.) But he is specifically trying to create an index entry for a bookmarked
range, which you can also do. And the procedure he describes should work. This is the correct way to create an index entry for something that is discussed over the course of several pages. -- Suzanne S. I think that what he asked for was an index that lists where each
occurrence of the word "budget" appears, because he seems to be bookmarking the first occurrence of the word "budget" and not the first and last occurrences of the word "budget." No, his description is perfectly clear. The word appears numerous times in a
specified range of pages, which he [should have] bookmarked. You can have the index show that range by using the \r switch. This is described in Word's Help topic "Field codes: XE (Index Entry) field" as follows: \r Bookmark Inserts as the entry's page number the range of pages marked by the specified bookmark. The field { XE "Selecting text" \r SelectingText } displays the entry as "Selecting text, 20-25" in the index. But it does appear that he has not applied the bookmark to the desired range, so you may well be right that he is expecting this procedure to list every occurrence (this is a job for Mark All instead, as you describe). -- Suzanne S.
