Default Why does formatting one word now change the whole document?

Everytime I try and make one word Bold, it turns the whole document bold.
Then if I undo, it removes all other font formatting. Ive never seen this
behaviour in previous versions of Word and Im completely exasperated!

Oh, found the answer further down the page:

It also works for Word 2003.
