Default Template Won't Change to Doc When Saving

Hello

I created a template with form fields and saved it in the appropriate
"templates" folder. I used "File/New" to bring up the template and fill in
my form fields. When I save, it attempts to save back into the "templates"
folder as a DOT file.

How do I get my templates to save as DOC files into the default data folder?

thanks
