Default office 2003 & Vista

I have Vista on my new computer and when I try to open a word document it
tells me that i do not have a file associated witht he file type. I try to
associate Wrod etc..., and it shows me that Word is the default program to
open .doc files, but it still does not open.

My wife has a profile as well on this computer, and does not have this
probelm- very strange...

Please help...
