Default Tool bar options grey

Using Word 2003 when I try to open an existing document it opens but I cannot
edit or add to it. Most options on the toolbar are greyed out.

When I attempt to create a new document I get a blank page but most tool bar
options are greyed out and I cannot type in the document. The curser is
present but doesn't move.

Any suggestions

Have you activated Word? Or is this an expired trial copy?
