Default Bloated File sizes in Word 2007

I have a document that I have been working on which is now thirty five pages
long. If I save it using Word 2007 the file size is 1.9M. If I save it
using Word 2003 the file size is only 236K. The new format for Word was
supposed to reduce file sizes but it doesn't matter what format it is saved
in, Word 2007 increases the file size nearly nine times over that of Word
2003. What is going on?

Are you saving it as Word 2007's native docx format (which is compressed)
or doc in Word 97-2003 compatibility format?

The size of a document will be determined by its content, but testing here
with a 35 page text only document - Word 2003 gave a file size of 174 kb,
Word 2007 in doc format gave 171 kb and in docx format 18 kb ?

It didn't matter which format. However, after your reply I tried copying &
paste my document into a brand new document and the problem went away. The
file is now even smaller than before. Something must have been corrupted in
the document. thank you for your help.
