Default Word 2003 formatting changes for entire document

I have set up a table with 3 columns in a document and want the top row
centred which is okay, but when I attempt to centre the 1st and 3rd columns,
everything in the document centres. I have tried recreating it and it still
happens. I emailed it to another user and it happened on her PC also,
although she could recreate it okay.

This formatting of the entire document is happening on a number of newly
created documents whether they have tables or not. Existing ones appear to
be okay.

Help - it's driving me nuts!!
