Default eliminate the drawing canvas when inserting a text box.

In Word 2002 a drawing canvas appears along with a text box each time I
insert one. It is annoying and I have to click and cut each time to get rid
of it. Word 2000 did not do this. Can this default be eliminated?

Tools | Options | General: clear the check box referring to the drawing
canvas.
