Default Are there any characters not allowed in file names now?

I could never use a "-" in a file name before! I am at a new job with Office
2003.

You can use any digits or letters, any character with ASCII value greater
than 127, space, or any of these: $ % ' - _ @ ~ ` ! ( ) { } ^ # & + , ; =
[ ]

That is, everything except : * ? / \ | "

You can also have multiple periods within a filename (the file extension is
whatever follows the last of them) -- but I recommend you don't do that.

Maximum length is 246 or 256 characters depending on your file system.

And, AFAIK, hyphens have always been permitted.
