Word added several hotizontal lines in place of short lines I put in with
underscores. I cannot get rid of them or even select them. When I put my
cursor over one, it shows the symbol for moving the line, but you can't move
it very far much less out of the document.

This is due to AutoFormat As You Type

Tools | Options | AutoCorrect Options
AutoFormat As You Type tab
In the Apply as you Type area, uncheck Border lines
