Default Background lines in Word 2003

When I open documents sent to me by email in Word 2003 they have a background
which appears like lined paper or squares. This makes reading the document
very difficult. If I create a new document from Word I do not get these
lines. Opening the same documents on other computers in Word 2003 does not
produce the lines. I have tried repairing Word and re-installing but this
has not helped. Does anyone know what has happened

Ordinarily I would think this was a grid issue. If it's possible to set grid
display by template, that might still be true. In the document, display the
Drawing toolbar, then select Draw | Grid and clear the check box (if
checked) for "Show gridlines on screen."

I confess I'm surprised, as I had thought this was an application-wide
setting.
