Default old doc files not opening ,giving file conversion menu

my old *.doc files not able to open , gives a file conversion menu to select
the encoding . but we have not encoded any files. is there any way to byspass
the encoding

It sounds like these old files are damaged. If you still have an installation of
the version of Word in which these were created, see if you can open them there?
