Default Print 3" x 5" cards, Word 2002

My goal is to be able to print anything I want on a 3" x 5" index
card. I would like to be able to print these index cards by placing a
card vertically (the 5" length of card upright) in the right hand side
of my Canon MP700 printer like I would do an envelope. So I clicked
on "Tool/Letters & Mailings/Envelopes & Labels/Labels/Options" where I
tried to find an 3 x 5 index card. I could not find a 3 x 5 card. I
looked at about everything trying to find something about the same
size. I chose "Print Single LabeI." I found something close ( I
don't remember now what it was) but when I tried to print I couldn't
get it to print on my card where it should be, in fact some of the
required print was not even on the card.

I did try to attack it in a different direction also, and that is I
clicked on "File/Page Setup/Paper and then set the paper size to 3" x
5" but I then from there I was unable to figure out how to get it to
print on my lonely little 3 x 5 card...haha...

Am I missing something simple somewhere along the line of how to print
on a 3 x 5 card because I have spent hours trying to figure what I
would think would be pretty simple and straightforward printing job.

I have about a half a dozen Word 2002 manuals and I could not find any
help in any of them...haha...

Any help anyone could give me to solve this printing problem would be
very much appreciated.

THANKS!!!

The first consideration is whether your printer can print on a 3" x 5" card
(many will not handle paper that small). If so, very likely 3x5 Card is
defined as a paper size in the printer driver, in which case you just select
it from the list on the Paper tab of Page Setup. If your printer manual or
Help file does not specify that the printer can print that size, then you'll
be taking a chance trying to get it to.

What you will find in the Envelopes and Labels dialog is label definitions
for sheets of several cards (such as Avery 5388, which has three cards to a
sheet). This may be the only way you can print 3x5 cards from your printer.

I looked in my Canon printer manual and it shows 4 x 6 as the
smallest. But I am sure that I have in the past printed out recipes
for my wife from some recipe programs but don't remember how but it
seems like it was from online from some website that has recipes. My
printer will feed a 3 x 5 card through okay when it is placed where I
would place an envelope. I did manage to get it to print 7 out of 10
lines from some other brand of stock label when I was searching for a
standard 3 x 5 card. I just have a feeling if I knew more about what
I was doing that I could make it work. I even tried setting up a
custon under the label classification.

When I printed using the Avery 5388, using standard 8.5 x 11 paper and
selecting "single label" it printed out what I wanted at the bottom of
the sheet but in the center position. If I could somehow move the
printing over to where the evelopes print out it would be fine...

I guess if worse came to worse I could always print it on a 4 x 6 card
and then cut it down to 3 x 5 with my paper cutter...haha...

Using the Paper tab of the Page Setup just doesn't cut it because it
prints in the wrong place. It prints in the center and my 3 x 5 card
won't feed through there. The only place it will feed through is
vertically like an envelope.

There has to be a way to do this but I don't know if I can figure it
out.

Do you have anymore ideas?

Thanks so much for your help.

If you can successfully feed the cards as you describe, then select an
envelope paper size and set the margins as needed to restrict the print area
to where the card will be. This will require some trial and error, of
course, but it should be possible.

I finally figured a three different crippled ways to print what I
wanted on a 3 x 5 card. I did Paper Tab Page Setup for a 4 x 6 card
and set the paper guide for 4 x 6 and held a 3 x 5 index card up
against the guide and it printed out perfect. Then another way I did
it was to set up for a 4 x 6 card and do my layout in the lower left
corner of the card so it looked like I was laying it out on about 3 x
5 portion of that 4 x 6 card and brought the paper guide over against
the 3 x 5 card and then printed it out. I had to adjust the layout of
what I wanted to print one more time to get the print on the card
where I wanted it. Then I setup for a 4 x 6 card and printed it out on
a 4 x 6 card and cut it down to a 3 x 5 card with my paper cutter.
More than one way to skin a cat sometimes...haha...

But if someone has a setup that will print my 3 x 5 index card so I
can put the guide up against a 3 x 5 card and do the layout on a 3 x
5 space and print it out like I was printing out an envelope I would
really like that. Or any other way to do it properly would be great.

Thanks Suzanne for your guidance and help.

THANKS to anybody who comes up with an answer for my problem!!!

Sounded like a good idea Suzanne so I tried it. I just couldn't seem
to get it to work and I think it is because I have 9 lines of info I
am try to put on the 3 x 5 card.

I sure have been burning up 3 x 5 cards and envelopes of two sizes
trying all of this out. If I knew I was going to waste as much as I
have I think I would have cut paper into the sizes I needed with my
paper cutter...haha...

I finally figured out what is wrong. It is FRIDAY THE 13th...haha...
Maybe everything will work better if I try it tomorrow...J/K...

Thanks so much Suzanne for you help and suggestions.

Have you tried "Enlarging/Reducing to fit the paper size (Fit-to-page
printing)", on Pg14 of the MP730/MP700 Software Guide (Printing)? If you
don't have your user guide, you can download a PDF version from Canon using
the following link:
http://alpha03.c-wss.com/inc/ApplServlet?SV=WWUCA900 then download the
following document:
MultiPASS_MP730_700_Software_Guide_EN.EXE

....and, once again, the pack-rat can sit back and laugh at problems.
Besides the ink-jets, I have an Epson dot-matrix printer with pin
feed, which I use to pour out 3x5 cards with collections of hints for
woodworking and metal-work, as well as Word, Works, and Photoshop.
Sometimes, older technology stiil can do thjings the newer stuff
can't. Unfortunately, in this day and age, you'd probably have to pay
a premium price for a dot-matrix, if you want one that isn't a giant
for commercial/factory use...

Blessed be, for sure...

But don't you have to buy tractor-feed cards to do this?

Believe it or not, they're still available, Suzanne, if you look hard
enough. It's been several years since I've needed to buy any -- 5,000
cards per box lasts quite a while!
