Default Tab button doesn't move the "bullet" in a list

I must have done something bad.

I use bulleted lists all the time...and love 'em.

Now, however, when I setup a bulleted list...and I hit the "tab"
button...instead of it automatically increasing the indent of the bullet
(i.e. to second, third, fourth levels) it just indents the text.

In other words, all of the bullets stay on the left margin. I can still move
the bullet by clicking the "increase indent" icon on the format
toolbar....but I really liked having that functionality via the "tab" button
on my keyboard.

Please help me restore this functionality.

I'm also afraid I somehow changed something else....because now when I open
other documents where I have created bulleted lists...or create new
documents...they, too, have lost the ability to move bullets with the "tab"
button.

Did I screw something up on my "normal" template? If so, how do I restore it
without losing my documents?

Unfortunately, you don't tell us what version of word you have, which
doubles my work. sigh

1. In Word 2000 or earlier, check "Tabs and backspace set left indent" on
the Edit tab of Tools | Options.

2. In Word 2002 or 2003, check "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and
backspaces" on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect
Options.

If no item is longer than one line, the easiest way is to set tab stops at
the appropriate places and insert the bullets manually as symbol characters.
If some of the bullet points have runover lines, use either a two-column
table or two newspaper-style columns depending on whether or not you want
the bullet points aligned vertically.
