Default Auto correct " o = ö / ' a = á

When I type ' or ", the symbol doesn't appear until I type something else.
If I type " and then move to another place in the sentence and hit another
key, the " appears where I've moved to.
" o turns into ö / ' a = á
Typing " [space] doesn't give the space, only the symbol.
Auto-correct doesn't have any entries starting with ' or ". I've disabled
smart quotes, but it still happens with plain quotes.
This happens in (Office 12 2007) Word, Excel, Outlook email messages and
Firefox.

Do you have the correct keyboard layout specified in Control Panel?

This is an indication that you have an international keyboard layout
enabled. Under this layout, certain keys serve as "dead keys" or "setup
keys" for accented letters. To get the value of the key itself, you have to
type a space afterward. Try going to Control Panel | Regional Options |
Input Locales and changing the keyboard.

You are indeed learned, oh great one.
I changed it back from US International to US, and hey presto.
I had been trying to overcome language defaulting to US in Word, but that
was actually more to do with styles.
Thank you.

I'm glad I could help--and thank you for the feedback.

For more on language settings in Word, see this article (not specifically
targeted at Word 2007, though):

You must be using US International Keyboard layout. If you want the
single or double quote marks, just type a space afterwards. Otherwise,
you'll get an accent.

I love this keyboard layout because it's so easy to use accented
characters. Just a little getting used to it. :-)
