Default upgrading

Why do they keep changing the programs if everything seems to be working
alright and why when they come out with a new program do we have to purchase
it at full price instead of just upgrading it for free. Why can't they make
the programs backwards compatible for those who do not want to or need to
upgrade? Is not Bill Gates rich enough yet?

Default upgrading

No one is forcing you to buy the new version of Word. You get your patches
for free but upgrades are completely different. New cars come out every year
and chances are you don't get a new car every year and you don't expect the
manufacturer to give you a new one for you. Or do you?

If the program works for you, then you are under no obligation to upgrade.
As JoAnn points out, you can still get patches and updates until the
application is out of support (three versions down the road).
