Default Can you keep Word 2007 open when the last file is closed?

When I close all open files in Word 2007, Word closes itself automatically.
This is very inconvenient. I have to reopen Word and to open a new file, I
have to go through the process of finding it. If Word had stayed open, I
would be in the general vicinity of directories/subdirectories of opening a
new file. Is there a way to keep Word open when closing the last file? Only
exiting when I click on the "X" or go to Exit?

Thanks so much for your help. This was my first time using the discussion
