Default Page break problem

I have inherited a document (Word 2003) which seems to have some sort of
forced page break in it - which I can't seem to delete.

So, I want to add text to Page 1, however I'm unable to access the space -
being forced instead to Page 2. The formatting seems normal when I view with
the show/hide or reveal formatting buttons.

I've checked the text is "normal" and tried to remove all other formatting.
There is a black square blob on page 2 when I show/hide but I can't delete
it. I've checked the page set up too and can't see anything there which I
can change.

Any ideas?

If that "black square blob" is actually rather small and in the left margin
adjacent to the 1st line of the 1st para on that page it is a clear
indication of the most likely source of your problem:-)

It indicates that one or more of the Format Paragraph Line & Page Breaks
attributes have been applied to that paragraph. With your insertion point in
the para, go into the Format Paragraph dialog box & you'll most likely find
a check in the box on the Line & Page Breaks page for Page Break Before.
