Default Why bullet precedes line numbers?

Using MSWord 2000, when I turn on line numbering [1], the
line numbers are preceded by a bullet. The bullets appear
both on the screen and when the document is printed.

When the same document file is viewed using MSWord 2003,
the bullet prefixes are not there. (Good.)

Any idea why the bullet prefix appears when using MSWord
2000?

More importantly, any idea how to get rid of the bullet
prefixes when using MSWord 2002?

I am not sure the bullets were always there. I was
surprised when I noticed them only recently. I might
have overlooked them before. But I think I would have
noticed them if they had been there earlier. So it is
possible that I did something advertently that enabled
the bullet prefixes. I am hoping there is an option to
disable them.

-----
[1] Line numbering is enable by going to File - Page
Setup - Layout and selecting Add Line Numbering
and Continuous.

Thanks for the response. But I think you misunderstood.
I am not talking about numbered paragraphs. I am talking
about line numbers, which are enabled under Page Setup -
Layout. Read the footnote in my original posting.

There is no reason I can think of why bullets (dot style)
should precede line numbers. I have never seen them before.
I cannot see any way to enable/disable them -- not under
Page Setup - Layout, anyway.

More noteworthy, I do not see them when the doc file is
viewed with one version of MSWord (2003). I see them only
when the same doc file viewed with an older version of
MSWord (2002) -- the version of MSWord used to create and
modify the doc file, by the way. I mentioned that in my
original posting.

Have you tried to repair the Word/Office installation? (For a recent
discussion, see the thread whose subject is "Line Numbers Have Unwanted
Paragraph Numbers" in this newsgroup.)

Thanks for the pointer. I read the thread, and I agree
that the description does seem similar to my situation,
albeit I have bullets, not paragraph numbers. I am eager
to try it.

The last posting in the thread said that doing a "repair
Office" installation remedied the problem. I do not know
how to do that.

Can you provide more specific instructions?

I found a KB article on how to repair Office 2003. Will
that work for Office (Word) 2000?

Oops! I pushed Post instead of Cancel. I decided I
will simply look at the system with the problem to
see if I can figure this out for myself. (I am not
near that system at the moment.)

Thanks again for the pointer.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the problem went away on
its own. No idea what action caused the self-correction.

Stefan, do you have any idea what is the root cause of
the problem? I'm just curious.

Of course, if the problem reappears, we will try the
"repair Office" solution. Thanks again for the pointer.

This is good news -- but strange. :-)

No, I have no idea what causes it, unfortunately. :-(
I'm sure someone will be able to figure it out, eventually.

To repair the Word installation, just click Detect and Repair on the
Help menu.
