Default file converts to boxes

When I try to transfer files over my flash drive from my laptop to the
desktop they come out as boxes in font, why?

Most likely one of two reasons;

(a) You don't have the same fonts on both systems, or
(b) You may be corrupting the document if opening it directly from the flash
drive (depending on amount of available space).

If you *are* copying the file to the desktop's hard drive before opening it,
my bet is on (a).
