Default SaveAs - Curious Behavior

This probably goes beyond Word, but...

Today, there's a peculiar new behavior which I first noticed on MS Word 2003
(WinXP Home). It seems to be replicated on other MS Office programs: Excel
and OneNote, but not others such as OE6, IE6 or Adobe Acrobat 6:

When I click on File | Save As, the normal dialog box opens, with the
default folder as MyDocs. If I click it to save in a different folder,
there's now a delay of five or more seconds before the SaveIn dropdown box
opens. Once that happens, I can make other selections with no delay.

Any obvious explanation?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
network drives that are not currently available.
