Default Allow on-the-fly formatting of text in Word docs.

I have Office 2003; I can't format on-the-fly in any Word doc. Previous
editions allowed that, this doesn't. It's as if there is only one template, a
standard doc, and if I change any paragraph's format, it changes the whole
template, and my whole document. WHY???????
