Default Word 2003 docs are "locked".

I tried to open a Word Template doc and got a "this document (and all others,
I subsequently found) is locked....." message. This seems to have happened
around the time I re-installed the MS-Works app I got with the computer.
Also, I received a box stating that my (converted) copy of MS Office had
expired (in 2004!) and did I want to convert it? I clicked "convert", went
through the re-install (twice) to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
