Default Decouple panning of main and footnote windows

I'm using Word 2003 on Windows XP. How can I decouple the panning of
both windows? Whenever I scroll around in one, the other pans,
apparently so that the footnotes shown in both windows match.

You need to disable Synchronized Scrolling. It's in the "Compare Side by
Side" floating toolbar.

You're welcome. (I've tried the synchonous scrolling - it doesn't help me at
all.)

I suspect Paul will be back since his question was not about Compare Side by
Side but about scrolling of text in the main document and footnote pane. I
don't know of any way to avoid this (except by using Side by Side, with the
footnote pane open in one window).

Hmm. Well, I don't have access at the moment, but no, I wasn't using
side-by-side. At least not with my awareness (not even sure what it
is, but I have my main document occupying most of the window, and the
footnote window occupying the bottom part in split-window fashion). I
guess I can solve some of the problem by doing Window-NewWindow,
vertically tiling the windows, and using (say) the right window to
open up footnotes. I'd be ignoring the main, nonfootnote panel in the
right window.

If you have Word 2003, you can open a second copy of the document and then
use Window | Compare Side by Side with [your other copy] to display them
side by side, synchronously scrolling or not, as desired.

I'll have to give that a try. My access to the environment is
sporadic. Thanks.

Well, Suzanne, you were right. Compare Side By Side is not what I'm
looking for, at least not with synchronous scrolling. The solution is
as I described, which is to tile up two windows into the same
document, use one for the window for the main part of the document,
and most of the other window for the footnotes part of the document.
Side By Side without synchronous scrolling, as you described,
simplifies the vertical tiling of the two windows. Thanks for that!
