Default Word merge template - field code off

I've inserted a field code in a Word docment that reads from a Access field
(a number field). However, when the data in Access merges with the Word
document, there are no commas inserted in the Word document field. It seems
like it's reading it as text in Word.

Can I format this field in Word to read as a number (w/ commas)? If not,
how can I get Word to read this number exactly as it is in Access?

Thanks, Karen
