I suspect what happened is that he tried to extract a picture from a Word document. One of the ways of doing this is to drag it to the desktop but, if you answer Yes to the second question, it screws up the desktop.

How do I know - because that's exactly what I've just done and am still trying to find a way out of this mess. If I find a cure, will post again.

OK - found something that worked for me and put my desktop back to the way it was .....

Access Display applet in Control Panel. Look on the Desktop tab. Click on
Customize Desktop, and then click on the Web tab. You mightl see that
there are checkmarks next to "My Current Home Page" and/or "Lock
Desktop Items". Uncheck these, Apply/OK out. If this solves it, great.
