Default In Word, how can I change code to text?

In Word, I retrieved a deleted file, but it is in code (lots of squares). How
do I convert it back to text? I've tried saving it in another file, opening
it as read only, and opening it as a "text" file, and nothing is working.
What can I do?

There's no guarantee that a file that was deleted can be retrieved in
pristine condition.

You might try to open the file by setting the type to "Recover text from any
file", Even then, you will get some formatting information that was not part
of the original text, which you will have to delete, but at least you won't
get unprintalbe codes.

I tried "recover text from any file" and only got the formatting codes such
as "header" and the number 3 repeated many times. Now I'm wondering if any of
these "restore deleted file" programs actually work, such as Restore 2000.
