I need to do a manual in word with an index page. Is there any way to link
the pages to the index so when changes are made in the document they are
automatically changed in the index page?

An INDEX field need only be updated to reflect changes in page number. But
if you want to add items to the index, you'll need to add XE fields.

If by "index" you mean a table of contents, then see
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html.

How are you building your index?
If you use Word's built-in feature, this is the normal behaviour...

In Word, you create an index by marking index entries and then inserting an
INDEX field. If you are using Word 2007, you'll find the commands in the
Index group on the References tab. See also
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/Createindex.htm (but note that the
article is not directly targeted at Word 2007).
