Nasty trick saving hyperlinks in crashes
It's nice of Word to save unsaved files when it crashes, but it
messes up hyperlinks. Example: The displayed text is MyInfo and the hyperlink is D:\Help\MyInfo.doc. After a crash the hyperlink becomes C:\Documents and Settings\Help\MyInfo.doc. A. Is there any way of stopping this happening? B. Is there any way of correcting these changes with Search and Replace? |

I can't imagine that Word would crash so much that you'd find it a hardship
that the hyperlinks don't work, so perhaps you should do some things to keep Word from crashing so much: 1. http://www.officearticles.com/misc/h...hard_drive.htm 2. http://www.officearticles.com/word/s...osoft_word.htm However, you can hit Alt+F9 to see the hyperlink CODE, and then you can easily Find/Replace within hyperlinks. ************ Hope it helps! Nasty trick saving hyperlinks in crashes
Thanks, Anne, for a couple of nice links, and for the tip on Alt+F9,
which will really help me clean things up. I don't get more than 3 or 4 Word crashes a week. I have one file with over 1,000 hyperlinks that seems to crash repeatedly when it decides to crash. Of course, I try to save repeatedly, but as hard as I try something always seems to get away from me. Nasty trick saving hyperlinks in crashes
The only times I've ever had Word crash are (a) when running macros
that contained mistakes, (b) when beta testing new releases that contain bugs, and (c) when loading corrupted documents sent by other users. Being lucky has little to do with it, but being careful is the key. There's also a corollary to Murphy's law involved: Just as carrying an umbrella at all times seems to prevent rain, having current backups at all times prevents crashes. :-) -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. Nasty trick saving hyperlinks in crashes
The plot thickens.
The hyperlink I set up is "D:\\Help\\0020 Software Microsoft\\DOS\\Dir diacritics.doc". When I hover the cursor over the displayed text, and when I open the hyperlink via the button on the toolbar, I see "file.///C:\Documents and Settings\Help\\0020 Software Microsoft\\DOS\\Dir diacritics.doc" But when I press Alt+F9 I see HYPERLINK "D:\\Help\\0020 Software Microsoft\\DOS\\Dir diacritics.doc" So Alt+F9 isn't a workable way of correcting the hyperlinks. The only times I've ever had Word crash are (a) when running macros that contained mistakes, Is this why Greg gets 3 or 4 Word crashes a week?? :-) It's actually slightly worse than Suzanne says. The 'hover text' can be set independently of the display text or the url - but the actual url should be displayed on the status bar. Anyway, the problem is caused by the fact that hyperlinks are stored as relative and your autorecovered file ends up in wherever you set under Tools Options File Locations - and the relative hyperlink thus gets based on that location. When you save the recovered document someplace else the hyperlink becomes fixed to the autorecover location. If you save the recovered document into the autorecover files location the hyperlinks based on that will remain relative to the document location. Then close the file, move it to its original location and reopen it and you should find that the relative hyperlinks point to the new (and original) location and all should be well. Yes, once I find something that will crash Word, it will dependably crash it
every time I try. But of course the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. g -- Suzanne S. Nasty trick saving hyperlinks in crashes
Suzanne's hyperlink is a most useful overview. I see from it that I
wasn't using the accepted terminology to describe the situation, but near enough. Tony's take on how the realities of the hyperlinks looks like it leads me to a long term solution. Since all my data are stored on drive D, I've changed the default autorecovery drive to D:\. If that doesn't do the trick, I'll go through the save and relocate routine he suggests. Tony Jollans wrote: ... it's something someone who has just experienced a crash is unlikely to be calm enough to remember. Oh, I quite agree I didn't say it was good design, just what (I understand) happens! Word's handling of hyperlinks causes many people problems even without Word crashes. Mind you, if Greg crashes Word every day or two he's not likely to be in a lot of shock. I must say, in passing, that I find crashes to be a bit like buses - you don't see one for ages and then three come along all at once. (And note that the "hover text" [ScreenTip] is covered in my referenced article.] I will read your article - I'm sure it will be comprehensive. -- Enjoy, Tony "Suzanne S. Jay Freedman wrote: The only times I've ever had Word crash are (a) when running macros that contained mistakes, Is this why Greg gets 3 or 4 Word crashes a week?? I hope that makes sense! -- Enjoy, Tony "Greg" wrote in message oups.com...
