Intermittent problem. Many documents look fine on the screen but when they
print are indented far to the right. When print left margin says 1 inch.
After print left margin says 2.67 inches.

Why for does it do this and how can I keep from happening?

If the printer is an HP LaserJet, see if there is a driver for your printer
at http://www.hp.com/pond/ljbeta/index.html. The 2.67" margin is the common
symptom of a problem seen almost exclusively with these HP printers.
