What is HTML?
Actually, I would call it an abbreviation. I prefer to reserve the word
"acronym" for abbreviations that are pronounced as a word rather than individual letters. -- Suzanne S. Everything I've read backs up your preference. :-)

I think that's mistaken. Acronym refers to etymology, not pronunication,
This is the OED's view also. And I think it more useful to use abbreviation for the more general sense of a shortened form (which might or might not be acronymic) that continues to imply the full word: 'st', 'Mrs', 'ave', 'etc', etc. "Suzanne S. You have a good point about the etymology. Still, I think it's a helpful
distinction. -- Suzanne S. What is HTML?
It's a useful distinction, but I think this isn't the way to make it. It
also rather breaches Ockham's rule: I can't see that we gain much from a category that separates IBM from IKEA. Wikipedia uses the term 'initialism' for the former class; but their own examples themselves ambiguous. SARS is S-A-R-S in some parts of the English-speaking world and rhymes with 'cars' elsewhere.
