Default Text replacement

Normally I can highligh text and replace the highlighted text with other
text. Now when I try this, the new text is placed before the highlighted text
and the highlighted text remains! What the??? What would have changed in the
Word 2003 aplication for this to start happening? And, how do I change it
back?

Tools, Options, Edit tab, check the "Typing replaces selection" box.
