Default Mail merge number formatting

I am using Windows XP, and I am trying to mail merge a letter with an excel
database.
Everytime I do the merge my numbers change appearrance. 13,452 becomes
1342. The comma is lost.
Dates that show on my date base as March 1, 2005 show in the merged document
as 03/0105.
How can I fix this?
