Default Uninstall method for Works Suite 2004

I have encountered a problem with Word 2002 not opening directly from the
program but will open from Works Suite 2004 after selecting Word from the
list of applications.
I assume I need to uninstall Works Suite 2004 and use the CD obtained from
the PC manufacturer to reinstall the portion that applies to Works and Word.
I also have Money 2004, Streets & Trips, Encarta and Picture It originally
installed from the CD.
I need to be certain of the correct uninstall method to use before
reinstalling to correct the problem with Word opening.

What do you mean by 'not opening directly from the program'?
You almost certainly don't need to uninstall anything.
If you create a shortcut on the desktop to winword.exe what happens when you
click it?

pWhen I click on Word from within Start/All Programs, it resonds with the
message "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."
Clicking on a desktop or start menu shortcut results in the same error
response.
The only way I can open word is to open Works Suite 2004 and select the Word

I want to add that I discovered a glitch by clicking on Start/Search and
keying in WINWORD.EXE and found there are 3 items. Two of them are prefetch
files and the other is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
10. I then right-clicked on that item and chose to Pin to Start Menu. I
then clicked on the start menu item WINWORD.EXE and it opened Word to a blank
document, followed by clicking on the open folder icon, choosing a .doc file
and it opened. However, I cannot go directly to a .doc file and open it
without going through the start menu first. So I must always begin from the
Start Menu, choose WORD.EXE to open a blank document and then click on the
open folder icon to choose a .doc file in order to open it.

Try reregistering Word as described at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm. Or right-click on a
..doc file, choose Open With, select Word, and make sure the box for "Always
use this program to open files of this type" (or words to that effect) is
checked.

Neither of these suggestions seem to work. I first tried to right-click on a
..doc file, choose Open With, select Word, and make sure the box for "Always
use this program to open files of this type". However, it indicates the
program is not installed. Then I tried to register as described at the
website. but the process does not respond via Start/Run and typing "winword
/r" for all versions from Word 97 and above.

The fact that you have winword.exe in the Office folder, which runs when it
is clicked, is all the indication you need to know that the application is
installed! If you repair Word it should rebuild its shortcuts. Or you could
replace the existing Start menu shortcuts with new ones pointing to
Winword.exe in the Office folder.
As for the Windows Explorer issue that Suzanne mentioned, Right click a
document then select Open With Choose Program (DO NOT PICK Microsoft
Office Word even if it is listed). From the Choose Program dialog, use
Browse to browse to the Office folder that contains winword.exe and pick
that file. Check the button to always open with this program and OK out of
the dialog.
If this doesn't fix it you will have to repair Word from its installation
CD.

This is frustrating since I cannot seem to correct the problem. I have now
tried the following:
1. Right click a document then select Open With Choose Program (DO NOT
PICK Microsoft Office Word even if it is listed). From the Choose Program
dialog, use
Browse to browse to the Office folder that contains winword.exe and pick

2. I then tried to repair Word from its installation CD, which is a Works
Suite 2004 CD pack that includes Word on the first CD. I did not find any
option to "repair" (it only installs the programs and shortcuts). Am I
missing something in this process?

Does this mean I need to uninstall and reinstall? I have no idea why this
is happening since I have been using Works Suite 2004 programs since April,
2004, including Word 2002.

Yes, I have "Detect and Repair" and have just finished re-running it.
However, it then prompts me as follows: In orer to currectly pick up or
restore your settings, the folloiwng programs must be closed: It displays
"Microsoft Word" so I closed the blank file I used to reach Detect and Repair
and hit "Retry" after which I get the following prompt: "This action is only

Then I tried re-opening Word from the Start menu shortcut that I created

prompt that follows: "Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current
user. Please run setup to install the application."

Default Uninstall method for Works Suite 2004

Now it just gets worse. I cannot open Word no matter what I try. I have
tried 3 options to open Word:
1. clicked on the Start menu shortcut for Word and it ceases to open Word.
2. clicked on Start\Search and keyed in Word.exe which then again displays
in the Office 10 folder where I clicked and it also does not open Word.
3. clicked on Start\Works Task Launcher shortcut and selected the Word
application.

Every one of these methods will not open Word but I get the following
prompt: "Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current user. Please
run setup to install the application". Meanwhile, Works spreadsheet,
calendar, Money, and other applications that were originally installed from
the Works Suite 2004 pack of CDs still do work.

Will it correct all of this if I re-insert the installation CD and install
over the Works and Word programs that were formerly installed from the first
CD, which also involves re-registering again? Or do I need to uninstall
selected Works Suite programs (which formerly included Word) before running
the CD installation?

This is frustrating since I cannot seem to correct the problem. I have

now
tried the following:
1. Right click a document then select Open With Choose Program (DO NOT
PICK Microsoft Office Word even if it is listed). From the Choose Program
dialog, use
Browse to browse to the Office folder that contains winword.exe and pick
that file. Check the button to always open with this program and OK out of
the dialog. It then indicates it is not installed.

I have no idea why this
is happening since I have been using Works Suite 2004 programs since

April,
2004, including Word 2002.

Default Uninstall method for Works Suite 2004

I finally decided to reinstall Works and Word 2002 with the CD this evening
and it went very smoothly. Both Works and Word open as should be now. If I
had known the outcome before I would have done this immediately. Ha! Thanks
for your responses both Suzanne and Graham. I appreciate your assistance.

I want to add that I discovered a glitch by clicking on
Start/Search
and keying in WINWORD.EXE and found there are 3 items. Two of
them
are prefetch files and the other is located in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office
10. I then right-clicked on that item and chose to Pin to Start
Menu. I then clicked on the start menu item WINWORD.EXE and it
opened Word to a blank document, followed by clicking on the
open
folder icon, choosing a .doc file and it opened. However, I
cannot
go directly to a .doc file and open it without going through the
start menu first. So I must always begin from the Start Menu,
choose
WORD.EXE to open a blank document and then click on the open
folder
icon to choose a .doc file in order to open it.

pWhen I click on Word from within Start/All Programs, it
resonds
with the message "This action is only valid for products that
are
currently installed." Clicking on a desktop or start menu
shortcut
results in the same error response.
The only way I can open word is to open Works Suite 2004 and
select
the Word program and then click on the open folder.

What do you mean by 'not opening directly from the program'?
You almost certainly don't need to uninstall anything.
If you create a shortcut on the desktop to winword.exe what
happens
when you click it?

I have encountered a problem with Word 2002 not opening
directly
from the program but will open from Works Suite 2004 after
selecting Word from the list of applications.
I assume I need to uninstall Works Suite 2004 and use the CD
obtained from the PC manufacturer to reinstall the portion
that
applies to Works and Word. I also have Money 2004, Streets &
Trips, Encarta and Picture It originally installed from the
CD.
I need to be certain of the correct uninstall method to use
before
reinstalling to correct the problem with Word opening.
